How many KDP books to make money? If you mean real money, the kind that covers rent, the best answer we have is about 25.

That’s not a guru number. In Written Word Media’s 2025 survey of 1,346 authors, those with 25 or more books had a median income of about $3,000 a month, and more than 40% of them earned over $5,000. Authors with five to nine books had a median of about $50.

Sixty times the income for roughly 3.6 times the books. That gap is the whole story of a KDP portfolio business, and this post does the napkin math on it, with a small Python calculator you can rerun on your own numbers.

If you’re building that catalog with AI, the tool I’d start with is ImagineYourBook. It’s an AI book-writing tool that turns a prompt or your notes into a complete draft (one 10,000-word book in the trial, 40,000-word novels on paid plans) with Word and EPUB export. Its Series Continuation carries characters, open threads and the previous ending into Book Two, which matters because series are where the per-book money comes from.

TL;DR

  • In Written Word Media’s 2025 survey, authors with 25+ books had a median income of about $3,000 a month; with 5-9 books it was about $50.
  • 44% of surveyed authors earn $100 a month or less, and 80% of authors with 1-4 books are in that group.
  • Per book, bigger catalogs earn more: roughly $25 a month at the smallest income stage vs. $194 at $7.5k-10k (2022 data, napkin math).
  • $1,000 a month takes 140 books at small-catalog rates but 9-17 at series-catalog rates (assumption: flat per-book earnings).
  • At 2-3 AI-assisted books a month, 25 books is 9-13 months away; KDP now caps new titles at 2 per format per week.

What the surveys say: books vs. income

Written Word Media has asked indie authors about books and income for years. The samples are self-reported and skew toward serious, prolific indies (the 2025 hosts say so themselves). But the pattern hasn’t moved.

Written Word Media 2025 author survey, self-reported monthly income from books.

The 2025 survey splits monthly book income into four buckets: 44% of authors earn $100 or less, 28% earn $100 to $1,000, 15% earn $1,000 to $5,000 and 13% earn more than $5,000.

Catalog size lines up with those buckets. Of authors with one to four books, 80% sit in the under-$100 bucket. Five to nine books lifts the median to about $50 a month. At 10+ books, income starts to ramp, and at 25+ books the median is about $3,000.

The 2022 survey (1,300+ authors) looks at the same question from the other side: how many books do authors at each income stage have? On average, 5 books at $0 to $249 a month, 10 at $250 to $499, 23 at $500 to $999, 28 at $1,000 to $4,999, 45 at $5,000 to $10,000, and 50 above $10,000.

Older surveys land in the same place:

Survey Group Books Statistic
WWM 2017 Authors earning $100k+ in a year 30.3 (min 7, max 63) average
WWM 2019 Emerging / $60k+ / $100k+ 6 / 22 / 28 median
WWM 2022 Earning $10,000+ a month 50 average
WWM 2023 Earning $5,000-$7,500 a month 30 median
WWM 2025 Median income ~$3,000 a month 25+ catalog bucket
Five Written Word Media surveys, one pattern: full-time income shows up around 25-30 books.

And if you write romance, expect more company on the shelf: in the 2023 survey, the median author had 8 books, but authors who mainly write romance had a median of 18 and an average of 28.

Why the 25th book earns more than the 5th

Here’s the napkin part. Take the midpoint of each 2022 income stage and divide it by that stage’s average catalog. You get a rough “earnings per book per month.”

Bar chart of implied earnings per book per month by income stage, from Written Word Media 2022: about $25 (5 books), $37 (10), $33 (23), $62 (28), $134 (28), $139 (45), $194 (45) and at least $200 (50 books)
Napkin math: midpoint of each income stage divided by the stage’s average catalog. Bigger catalogs earn more per book.

At the small-catalog stages, each book brings in roughly $25 to $37 a month. At $2,500 to $5,000 a month it’s about $134, and at $7,500 to $10,000 it’s about $194. The 2025 medians show the same jump: $50 spread over about seven books is about $7 a book; $3,000 over at least 25 books is at most $120 a book.

So the books in big catalogs don’t just add up. Each one earns more. Three reasons, all from the same surveys and the KDP math we’ve covered before:

  1. Read-through. A reader who finishes Book 1 of a series keeps going. In our best AI for writing romance novels breakdown, a published five-book funnel turned one Book-1 reader into 3.08 book-reads, about $3.07 in Kindle Unlimited page reads instead of $1.00.
  2. Marketing gets amortized. The 2025 hosts point out that a $100 promo for a one-book author can only sell one book. With a ten-book series at $2.99, they say, the “product” is really a $30 series.
  3. Superfan ceiling. The 2023 write-up does the same math for wide sales: five $3.99 books cap a fan at $20; thirty books raise the cap to $120.

Correlation, not a guarantee: these are survey averages and medians. Writing 25 books doesn’t cause $3,000 a month; authors who reach 25 books have usually also learned covers, blurbs, series structure and marketing along the way. Treat book count as the minimum, not the plan.

The calculator: how many books for your target?

This script stores the survey numbers and turns them into “books needed” for a monthly target. The one big assumption: each book earns a flat amount per month, with no launch spike and no decay. That’s crude, so I run four per-book rates, all taken from the survey math above.

kdp_books_math.py: books needed for $1,000 a month at four survey-derived per-book rates.

Read the table sideways, not down. At small-catalog rates, $1,000 a month takes 140 books, which nobody should plan for. At the rate a mature series catalog seems to earn, it takes 9 to 17. The number of books matters, but what each book earns matters more, and that’s mostly series structure, covers, blurbs and marketing.

For scale: $1,000 a month is about 292 sales of a $4.99 eBook at the 70% royalty (KDP deducts an average $0.06 delivery cost per sale, per its eBook royalties page), or about 1,000 full KU reads of a 40,000-word book at the 2026 average of roughly $1.00 per read (from the romance breakdown above). Our KDP royalty calculator in Python does the per-sale math for any price.

How fast can you get to 25 books?

This is where AI changes the timeline, and where KDP’s new rules set a ceiling.

Animation of a KDP catalog growing over 26 months at 1, 2 and 3 books a month: 3 a month passes 25 books in month 9, 2 a month in month 13 and 1 a month in month 25, with survey milestone lines at 5, 10, 25 and 45 books
Assumption: steady release cadence and every book stays live. Milestones from Written Word Media 2022 and 2025.

At one book a month, 25 books takes 25 months. At two a month, 13. At three, 9. Drafting capacity isn’t the bottleneck anymore: ImagineYourBook’s Publisher plan ($59.99) is sized for three 40,000-word novels a month, and an API-only workflow costs very little per draft (we measured $0.04 to $17 in tokens for a 50,000-word novel).

The real limits are elsewhere:

  • KDP’s weekly cap. Since September 2026, KDP’s Create a Book page allows up to 2 new titles per format per week, both to create and to submit. That’s 104 eBooks a year, plenty for a series publisher. But you can’t drop a five-book series on one Monday anymore, so stagger it with pre-orders.
  • Disclosure. KDP’s content guidelines require you to disclose AI-generated text, even if you edited it heavily afterwards.
  • Your editing hours. A draft isn’t a book. Revision, covers and blurbs are still the job, and the 2023 survey found 55% of authors who use professional editors spend over $500 per book.

The compounding napkin math, 3 years out

Assumptions, clearly mine: you release two books a month into series, nothing gets unpublished, and the catalog’s per-book earnings climb along the survey ladder as it grows.

Month Books live (2/month) Matching survey stage Implied per book Napkin income
3 6 5-9 books (2025) ~$7 ~$43/mo
12 24 $500-999 stage (23 books) ~$33 ~$780/mo
14 28 $1k-5k stages (28 books) $62-$134 ~$1,750-$3,750/mo
24 48 $5k+ stages (45 books) ~$139+ ~$6,670+/mo

That last row is what survey averages look like if your books perform like the median author’s at each stage. They might not. Correlation isn’t causation: high earners also invest more in covers, editing and email (the 2025 survey found authors with a list earn a median $300 a month vs. $15 without one). Use the ladder as a map, not a promise.

Where this can be wrong

  • Self-reported, biased samples. Written Word Media says its respondents over-represent serious, prolific indies.
  • Midpoints are my assumption. Stage incomes are ranges, and the $10k+ stage has no top, so I used $10,000 as a floor.
  • Book counts include novellas. WWM’s Clayton Noblit said in the 2023 comments that most respondents likely counted novellas.
  • Survival bias. People who quit after three books rarely answer author surveys.

The takeaway

How many KDP books to make money? Plan on 25, in series, before you judge the business. At that size, the median surveyed author earns about $3,000 a month, because each book in a connected catalog earns far more than a standalone. With AI drafting, 25 books is a 9- to 13-month project, not a decade.

If you want to start Book One of that catalog today, draft it in ImagineYourBook. The 7-day trial is $0 today but needs a card, includes one complete 10,000-word book, and the first $29.99 Author payment starts after 7 days unless you cancel before day 8. Then write Book Two, and rerun the calculator.
