If you’re searching for the best AI for writing romance novels, you’re probably not asking which chatbot writes the prettiest sentence.
You’re asking a business question: which tool gets a finished, consistent five-book series into Kindle Unlimited for less than that series will earn?
So I ran the numbers on that question instead. With 2026 page-read rates, a published read-through curve and real plan prices, a five-book romance series drafted with AI pays back its drafting cost once about 33 readers finish Book 1.
The tool I’d pick for that job is ImagineYourBook. It’s an AI book-writing tool that turns a prompt or your notes into a complete, chapter-by-chapter draft (a 10,000-word book in the trial, 40,000-word novels on paid plans), exports Word and EPUB, and carries a story bible from Book One into Book Two. Its own FAQ says most members write romance and romantasy series, and series memory is exactly what this math rewards.
TL;DR
- One full Kindle Unlimited read of a 40,000-word romance pays about $1.00 (211 KENP × the 2026 average of $0.00474 a page).
- Read-through turns that into 3.08 books, about $3.07, per reader who finishes Book 1.
- A five-book series drafted on a $59.99 plan costs about $100 and pays back at 33 Book-1 readers (29 to 37 across 2026 rates).
- Assumption: one new series every 2 months with 20 Book-1 readers each a month reaches $738 a month by month 24.
- So the best AI for romance is the one that protects read-through: series memory, your romance contract, whole books, KDP-ready files.
What “best” means for a romance series: 5 tests
A romance reader in Kindle Unlimited doesn’t care which model you used. She cares whether Book Two keeps the promises Book One made. That gives five practical tests:
- It remembers Book One. Same scar, same family, same unresolved secret.
- It keeps the romance contract. Tropes, heat level, dealbreakers and the HEA you promised.
- It writes whole books, not three polished paragraphs at a time.
- It exports what KDP takes: a Word file or EPUB you can edit and upload.
- It costs less per book than a book earns. That’s the part most “best AI” lists skip, so most of this article is about it.
| Test | Why it matters in KU | ImagineYourBook (per its pricing page and FAQ) | General chatbot or raw API |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remembers Book One | Book 1 → 2 read-through (65% here) drives the $3.07 | Series Continuation with a story bible: characters, world rules, open threads, previous ending | You keep the story bible and paste it back in |
| Keeps the romance contract | Readers come back for the promise | Tropes, boundaries and dealbreakers carry through every chapter; heat dial from sweet to open door | Depends on your prompt in each session |
| Writes whole books | Five 40,000-word books per series | Plans the book, then writes chapter by chapter; sizes from 5,000 to 120,000 words | Usually a chapter or a scene per request |
| KDP-ready files | You need an editable manuscript | Word, EPUB and Markdown plus a cover | Copy and paste into Word |
| Cost per book | A full read pays ~$1.00 | $29.99, $20.00 or $15.00 per 40,000-word novel (Author, Publisher, Mogul) | $0.04 to $17 in tokens per 50,000 words in our test, plus your time |
Heads-up for steamy series: ImagineYourBook’s heat dial runs from sweet and closed-door through fade to black to open door, which its FAQ describes as intimacy on the page “written with feeling rather than graphic detail.” Fully explicit scenes are currently not available, so if your sub-genre promises explicit content, plan to write those scenes yourself.
How Kindle Unlimited actually pays a romance novel
KU doesn’t pay per borrow. According to KDP’s help page on KU royalties, you earn your share of the monthly KDP Select Global Fund based on pages read, measured in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP), first-time reads only, capped at 3,000 KENP per title per customer.
Amazon doesn’t publish a per-page rate, but authors reverse-engineer it every month. Written Word Media’s tracker lists US rates from $0.004202 (January 2026) to $0.005365 (September 2026). The nine-month average is $0.00474 per page.
How many pages is a romance novel? KDP doesn’t say that either. Authors comparing word counts with their KENPC report roughly 170 to 200 words per page (koobe.ai’s KENP calculator summarizes this). At 190 words per page, a 40,000-word book is about 211 KENP. One full read pays:
211 KENP × $0.00474 ≈ $1.00
One dollar per finished book. That number alone makes AI drafting look expensive. It isn’t, because romance readers don’t stop at one book.
The read-through multiplier: 3.08 books per reader
Kindlepreneur’s read-through guide uses an example five-book series where 100 readers of Book 1 become 65, 50, 48 and 45 readers of Books 2 to 5, and notes that many authors see something like 50 to 60% from Book 1 to Book 2.
Add those up: 308 book-reads per 100 Book-1 readers, or 3.08 books per reader. At $1.00 per full read, every reader who finishes Book 1 is worth about $3.07 in page reads across the series.

That’s the whole case for series memory in one number. If Book Two reads like a stranger wearing your heroine’s name, your 65% drops, and so does that $3.07.

Break-even: 33 readers on the Publisher plan
ImagineYourBook’s pricing page prices capacity in novels: a 40,000-word novel uses 8 credits. Author ($29.99/month) covers about 1 novel a month, Publisher ($59.99) about 3, Mogul ($179.99) about 12.
That makes the drafting cost of a five-book series $150, $100 or $75, if you use the plan’s full capacity. Divide by $3.07 per Book-1 reader:

- Author: 49 readers to pay back the series.
- Publisher: 33 readers (29 at September’s rate, 37 at January’s).
- Mogul: 25 readers, but only if you really publish twelve novels a month.
Thirty-three people finishing Book 1 is a small number. The hard part isn’t the drafting bill. It’s getting those first 33 readers, and making Book 1 good enough that 65 of every 100 come back.
Compounding: one new series every two months
Now the portfolio view. This is pure napkin math, so here are my assumptions, clearly not data:
- You launch a new five-book series every 2 months (the Publisher plan drafts 6 novels in that time).
- Each live series gets 20 new Book-1 readers a month, flat, forever. No growth, no decay.
- Kindle Unlimited income only. No sales, ads, editing or cover costs. You pay $59.99 every month.

Under those assumptions, monthly KU income passes the plan cost in month 2, cumulative profit turns positive in month 4, and by month 24 twelve series bring in about $738 a month, with roughly $7,400 cumulative after plan costs.
Change one input and the picture moves a lot. At 5 readers per series per month, month 24 is $184 a month and you don’t break even until month 16. At 50 readers it’s $1,844 a month. Readers per series is the variable you actually control, through covers, blurbs and Book 1 quality. Our sister story on Medium makes the same point from the catalogue side: Your First Book Won’t Pay the Bills. Your Tenth Might.
A romance series tool stack that fits the math
- Write the series brief once. Tropes, heat, dual POV or not, dealbreakers, what stays canon. ImagineYourBook keeps those rules across every chapter.
- Draft Book One. The pricing page estimates about 25 to 60 minutes for a 40,000-word book.
- Make it yours. Edit in Word: voice, the scenes you care most about, the grovel. Under KDP’s content guidelines you must disclose AI-generated text when you publish; AI-assisted editing of your own writing needn’t be disclosed.
- Continue the series. The story bible (characters, open threads, the previous ending) carries into Book Two at no extra credits.
- Price and enroll. Check your real KENPC on the Promote and Advertise page, then run the numbers with our KDP royalty calculator in Python.
- Track read-through monthly. Replace my 65/50/48/45 with yours.
Prefer wiring raw model APIs yourself? Our breakdown of what a 50,000-word novel draft costs on the OpenAI and Claude APIs puts the token bill at $0.04 to $17. Tokens are cheap there; the cost is your hours keeping continuity across five books. For sub-genre picks, see our dark romance AI writers roundup and the broader best AI book writers overview.

Where this napkin math can be wrong
- The per-page rate is author-reported. Trackers disagree: Written Word Media lists August 2026 at $0.005170, while USA Book Studios’ estimator shows $0.00489. Your Prior Months’ Royalties report is the truth.
- KENP per word varies. At 170 words per page the same book is 235 KENP; at 200 it’s 200.
- The funnel is one published example, not a benchmark. Literary Inspired notes that a romance series with a different couple per book has lower expected read-through than one continuous couple.
- It ignores sales and costs. Paid sales add income; covers beyond the included one, editing, ads and your time subtract. And as ImagineYourBook’s own FAQ puts it, sales are never guaranteed.
The takeaway
The best AI for writing romance novels is the one that protects your read-through, because read-through turns $1.00 per book into $3.07 per reader. At 2026 KU rates, a five-book series drafted on a $59.99 plan pays for itself at 33 Book-1 readers. Everything after that is portfolio.
If you want to test that on your own series idea, start your Book One brief in ImagineYourBook. The 7-day trial is $0 today but needs a card, includes one complete 10,000-word book, and the first $29.99 Author payment starts after 7 days unless you cancel before day 8. Then write Book Two before you check the numbers again.
